Posters have been a staple of modern society since the 19th century, and have served to educate, entertain, and propagandize generations of people. Today, people can easily print their own posters through a print shop or with their own printer, and the possibilities for what can be designed are practically limitless.
But what size of poster paper rolls will you need to print all of your lovely posters? How do you even figure out sizing? Read on for everything you need to know about your printer paper options!
What Are Poster Paper Rolls?
Essentially, these are large rolls of paper that are made to work with a wide format printer. Wide format inkjet printers are great for printing posters, blueprints, and other large papers and diagrams.
Many businesses buy these rolls and printers so they can easily print their own materials. This saves them money in the long run, as they don’t have to contract with expensive printing companies to print thousands of posters or other materials.
There are a variety of poster paper options in different sizes and thicknesses. Some are better for certain jobs like small advertisement posters, while others are better for bigger displays.
Papers each have their own weight and materials. If you want a thick, durable poster, 28 lb. paper might be in your best interest. However, if you just want something light and quick, 20 lb. paper will probably work just fine.
In the same way, you’ll have to think about the type of paper when you’re choosing printer paper for your next project. If you’re looking to make a movie poster, glossy or matte paper is your best bet. But if you just want to print a simple flyer, uncoated bond paper is the way to go.
What Size Posters Can You Print?
There are quite a few sizes of posters you can choose from! The truth is, there is no “correct” poster size, but there are several very common sizes and shapes you can print.
With poster paper rolls, you can print a poster of practically any size, as long as it’s within the width of the roll. That’s a definite improvement over standard, pre-cut pieces of paper!
But if you want to make your formatting job a little easier, here are a few of the more common poster print sizes that people use today.
A4 Posters
These are about the smallest you’ll typically want to go with posters. A4 measures 8.3 x 11.7 inches, which is about the size of a standard sheet of paper.
These posters are great for notices and memos at your company or as small signs to get people’s attention.
A3 Posters
A3 posters measure 11.7 x 16.5 inches. This means their narrow end is the same length as the wide end of an A4 poster.
This size of poster is great for advertising and catching people’s eye, although it’s still rather small. An A3 poster is also known as tabloid when it is displayed horizontally rather than vertically.
A2, A1, and A0 Posters
These are the bigger sizes of paper that many people think of when they think of “posters”. A2 is the smallest of this group at 16.5 x 23.4 inches, and A0 is by far the largest, at 33.1 x 46.8 inches.
If you want some of these larger sizes, you’ll need to order rolls of printer paper that can handle the width of these posters. Some rolls are made for smaller print jobs and won’t work for posters of this size.
Other Sizes
Besides these standard sizes, you can pretty much print a poster any size you want! You may need to trim it down after it’s printed, but that’s quite easy to do.
The only requirement is to find a roll and printer wide enough for one of your poster’s dimensions. Once you have that, you’re golden!
