Signs, signs, signs are everywhere! While electronic and digital signage seem to be becoming the norm, traditional printed signage is still holding its own. That said, in a flashy world of pixels and shimmering lights, you need to know how to make those posters, banners, murals, and other printed pieces stand out. If you think your signage projects are lacking, read about these four design tips for creating eye-catching signage.
Keep It Simple
Just because you have plenty of room to work with, that doesn’t mean you should try to cram every square inch with words and images. Negative space is the canvas that allows messaging and more to be seen and read at a distance. If visual noise is constantly distracting a viewer’s eye, they’re less likely to find, much less settle on, your main message and call to action. Keep those elements front and center by not setting them against a background of visual mush.
Use Fewer Fonts
With computers came the power of fonts. Unfortunately, with fonts came the desire to use them all at once. This has created chaotic and cacophonous layouts choked with corny, unsightly, and inappropriate fonts. Limit the number of fonts on the page to two or three at most, but let one dominate and carry the primary message. Also, just because you can bold, italicize, underline, and otherwise emphasize text with such special effects doesn’t mean you should. Pick the right font to grab the reader’s attention and hold it.
Be Aware of the Sign’s Surroundings
Before you design the sign, you should visit the place where it’ll hang or stick. Note the colors of the wall it’ll rest on. Pick the right color paper or background so that it won’t fade into the wall or backdrop. Obviously, a green sign won’t stand out against a field of trees. Note the lighting as well. If things are dull and gray, make your sign stand out with a bright motif, for example. If the product or brand you’re advertising has specific colors, you need to consider those as well. Notify the client that you’d rather avoid the possibility of seeing their brand visually diluted by the surroundings.
Know Your Audience
Here’s the last of our four design tips for creating eye-catching signage. Too many advertisers rely on stock photos for their ads. Stand out by creating illustrations and photographs that break the mold and consider your audience. People want to see themselves in the people populating your ads, so be aware of an area’s demographics. And make sure imagery is relevant to their needs and sensitive to their beliefs. Always remember to give them something to talk about!
